A collection of short stories about love between girls.

Happy 2nd birthday, Picture This!

And what a crazy couple years it's been. We apologize for the laggy lateness on this year's piece, real life and all that good stuff. But we pumped this out over the weekend and I hope you guys enjoy it! And the rambling that is to follow. :XD:

We really wanted to talk about and incorporate two tumblr asks we got recently, which were:

"Which of the girls has changed the most since you announced the project and how? Who's changed the least? Why do you think this is?"

and

"What kind of flowers do you think represent the girls?"

As a disclaimer, the language of flowers is about as muddled and ambiguous as the English language, so the reasons I picked them may not always be because of the meaning, or I kind of pick and choose what meanings I prefer. ;P So without further ado; Side A:

:bulletgreen: Sara: has matured and became more down to earth- Her plot and relationships with her antags has changed drastically, so her goofy, escapist outlook on life became more motivated through experience. It doesn't seem like a lot, but it's made her aware of the mistakes she makes, which is very important. She used to be sort of aimlessly pushed by various people and feelings, but now it's more like she pushes herself into things and regrets it later. She's also become considerably more solitary in the story because of these changes.
This is in direct contrast to Sam, who became more youthful and naive over time, pushing their night/day dynamic.
- Visually, Sara became more pointedly gangling, slouching, and bony. Her face became especially reliant on her eyebrows and wide mouth for expressions. I started with a pretty generic base for her but over time her gesture became more drastic and incorporated into all her movements/poses. I wanted her to feel very androgynous and skater in the way she walks and carries herself.
- We've associated Daisies with SamSara from the beginning, because it represented their relationship well- but of the two, it was more likened with Sara. Daisies are simple, innocent, loyal, patient, and young at heart. They're sweet and plain, which is kind of how Sara is, especially when it comes to love. She's a sensitive but simple person, and honestly doesn't require much attention to be content.

:bulletblue: Jess: What started out as an ice prince actually warmed up into more of a cocky, blunt firecracker. Before, she had left her temper in Texas entirely and became calculating and unfeeling, but over time I felt that her annoyance and short temper with certain situations started to come back the more we discussed their story, and what exactly caused drama to follow her. Her shorter fuse has made it a lot easier for her to get involved in the JayJess arc.
- Her body type is gradually solidifying, but like Jay, she's unapologetic ally androgynous-masculine, though sleeker and more streamlined than Jay due to her history of swimming in place of basketball. She's gradually gotten a slight but much needed haircut to make her style feel more deliberate and fashionable, and pushed her Hispanic roots more in her skin tone. I hope to work on her features much more as time goes on and as I work out her family.
- The Calla Lily is kind of sleek and graphic in the way it's shaped, very crisp and clean cut like Jess's sharp personality. They're beautiful, elegant, and a little vain.

:bulletpurple: Stella: Stella's still got plenty of growing to do, but I feel like her ocean of emotions is getting more vast... she's a very feeling character, and is passionate with a big- and easily broken- heart. Her development has brought to light a lot of feminist issues she'll experience and those things inadvertently made her stronger.
- Visually, Stella is still in the process of evolving. I did struggle with settling on various features for her initially, but over time she's become very confident in her design yet her face feels very gentle and slightly shy. I want to solidify her broad shoulders and jawline, to push her iconic runway model presence. I've also gone and given her a bit more chest. (Just like Gale omg)
- Stargazer lily... Stella, stargazer? How could I not? But otherwise, I knew I wanted a very decorated flower, and I love the mixture of pink and white. They're very delicate yet vibrant... pure, innocent, and romantic.

:bulletpink: Monica: Most of the self-consciousness she had at conception has been redirected into Stella, I've realized- Mona has become more level-headed, responsible, and a nurturing leader. I've gone digging into her Texan roots to find a more aggressive and confident, positive go-getter in Monica. There are finer details I need to work out for her, but I'm happy with this much needed groundwork.
- Visually, she's gone through a dozen fluctuations in size... I just wasn't sure what kind of plus size I wanted her to be. Hourglass? Pear? more significantly plus size? I feel like with solidifying her curves more, she became more stable- emotionally as well.
- Lily of the Valley- Sweetness, humility, happiness. They're cute and charming, cheery and honestly quite beautiful as a bouquet... Mona's the kind of girl to make you smile just in passing, even as a stranger. Cute happy flowers for a cute happy lady!

To read about Sam, Jay, Gale, and Sumi's answers, check out Ty's post!

Reblog this post on tumblr here!

Sketched our respective characters (SAI for me, PS for Ty.)
I did the linework in SAI, Ty put colors, gradients, and text on it in Photoshop CS5 :)

A walk down memory lane:

Thank you for all the favorites, comments, and watches!

I've been building up the courage to finally type this up and send this, but thank you. Thank you so much, you wonderful example of humanity at it's best (and thank Ty too) for sharing all of your magnificent and amazing characters and stories with all of us. I can never fully explain how much your diverse depiction of ladies and being whoever you are or whoever you want to be means to me. It's not something we get much of in the grand scheme of things, so when it comes along it doesn't just deserve, it NEEDS to be praised. There are so many people, girls in particular it seems, who struggle so much with being different from the perfect "ideal". We are measured up to impossible standards of how we act, how we look, who we love, even how we love, and so many little things that we could never hope to KNOW them all let alone follow and live up to them.

I just want you to know that the work you are sharing makes a difference. Not only just to the troves of others that I am sure have already told you the same thing, but to me as well. It's like breathing fresh air for the first time in years, seeing what you're putting out there- sharing these stories that tell us "It's okay to be anything." It's a hard thing to remember most days. Often it seems like an uphill battle, but the characters and stories you (and Ty!) are sharing really does help with that. It's opening a window that shows that there are people out there that are open and caring and accepting despite it all.

I've gotten away with myself and my flair for the dramatic. Sorry it was so long. I just had to say it. I love all your (and Ty's, of course) stories, but Picture This was the first I found, so I thought it only fitting that I that I say this in a Picture This comment.

First, I'm sososososo sorry for the late reply! Thank you for taking the time to write this to me, I'm really speechless...

I really don't know what to say... I admit some days I feel like we're just a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme, and that there won't ever really be a huge enough impact despite what we and other diverse & inclusive artists strive for. But then people like you remind me otherwise, that every single bit helps, and every person we can help matters because then they help others... and so on. Even we suffer for the standards thrust upon us, and it is a blow to our confidence periodically.. but I'm really really really glad I could at least do this for those who aren't emotionally ready themselves yet, or feel trapped- and using my own experiences and mistakes helped me create a safehaven in my- and Ty's- galleries and works and stories, at the very least. I always what to be that way.

No idea if I lost track of what I was saying or not, but thank you so much again, this really... really made me smile. :huggle:

I understand entirely. We all live in a busy, busy world.

I was happy to get this to you. The time it took was more than worth it. I firmly believe that truth means little if it is not shared and it's true that the worlds that you and Ty weave affect me in big, positive way, so I just knew I had to tell you.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is that you are very welcome and you deserve every word of praise I wrote and more.

I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS I WAS LIKE 'huh stella has really friggen wide shoulders...she's kind of masculine and pretty at the same time...huh..." AND NOW I UNDERSTAND BECAUSE SHOULDERS=BODY AND I CAN'T HANDLE IT BECAUSE YOU MADE HER BODY SO PERFECT
SO. PERFECT.
LIKE IF YOU REALLY LOOK AT HER YOU CAN TELL THAT SHE'S TRANSITIONING AND I CAN'T HANDLE THIS
I'M LOSING MY SHIT BECAUSE YOU MAKE HER BODY SO PERFECT LIKE I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER LOOKING AT THIS AND NOTING HER SHOULDERS AND BODY AND IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW AND YOU MADE IT SO WONDERFUL
LIKE I JUST
YOU SHAPED HER EXACTLY LIKE A TRANSITIONING WOMAN SHE'S SO PERFECT ILU MAN

WAHAHAHAHA YES CONGRATS WOW YOU ARE SO OBSERVANT HAVE A MEDAL :star:
I've definitely been trying to get more set and concise in how I draw Stella's features, and I think it's pretty obvious part of it in the beginning was my skill as an artist that kept me from being quite as blatant as I am now. That and the gradual decision to make her a little less cis-passing, if you will- keeping some traits you can't lose with HRT, but it's not like it matters in the end, it's just a part of her natural appeal. :') I can get really self conscious about this stuff but YOUR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT MAKES ME SO HAPPY OK ILU TOO BUDDY LETS HUG IT OUT

IT'S OKAY IF YOU NEED TO EXPRESS YOUR FEELINGS IN CAPSLOCK WE DON'T MIND WE DO IT ALL THE TIME TOO
WE UNDERSTAND MAN CARRY ON

Hmm, this sparks a question- Does Stella indeed plan for surgery? Obviously, It'd be in the future, but eventually?
I remember some sketchdump with Stella's father, I hope her parents are supportive?
(and I also realize that's why her breasts are small, as shown in the body study, which seems odd at first due to her build and i cANT IT'S SO PERFECT)

I ALWAYS FEEL A LITTLE BIT BETTER ABOUT THE FURIES TAKING FOREVER WHEN I SEE YOU GUYS SLOWLY TRUCKING AT PT. A lot of advice I get about webcomics is to just DO IT but the Furies is like a BABY and that verse between me and Maggie is so damn precious so like. YOU GUYS REALLY TRYING TO TAKE YOUR TIME WITH PT IS ACTUALLY REALLY ENCOURAGING BECAUSE IT'S NOT JUST A RACE TO GET A WEBCOMIC OUT AND IT'S OKAY TO TAKE A WHILE TRYING TO MAKE IT WHAT YOU WANT SO THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY.

Now on to the - ya know, actually picture. THIS IS REALLY GREAT, you both make me so happy with how you work together (the whole YOUR STYLES COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER thing) and this just proves it more. I really like when you pick things for the characters like their flower of representation or I think you did candies one time and then you did accessories. It's always really fun to get more insight to the characters and the discovery for you two as artists must be really cool too because it's like you're getting to know people when you have to sit there and think WHAT FLOWER WOULD MATCH WHO FOR WHY.

ANYWAYS I THINK MY FAVORITES ARE SAM AND MONA BECAUSE UGH CAN YOU GUYS BE ANY MORE PRESHU??? Also I was not expecting that kind of adorable from Jay and it makes me shriek really loudly. No but really I'm kind of stuck on Mona and her curves and her loveliness and ugisdjlaskdf;llasdlgf/

ANYWAYS I LOVE THIS, I'M LEAVING YOU BOTH THIS COMMENT BECAUSE YOU BOTH NEED IT AND YEAH.

CAIT YOU FEELING BETTER ABOUT THE FURIES MAKES ME FEEL BETTER ABOUT PT TAKING A WHILE (OR AT LEAST IT FEELS LIKE IT SOMETIMES)
AND IT BECOMES THIS HAPPY CYCLE OF FEELING BETTER
:iconcraiplz:

I've poured hours into reading up on everything I possibly can about webcomics too omg... and they do all commonly say "JUST START." and "DON'T REDO PAGES" (we're already guilty of this haha) and stuff like that. It's inspiring but OMG IT'S REALLY HARD. It makes me feel like "shit goddamn we're already falling into no-nos and we're never gonna get off the ground", you know? But honestly, when I think about it... it takes some people 10+ years to realize a dream. Which seems like a long time, and all I can think is "Well I know I won't take THAT long!" and 2 years is nothing, considering the evolution of our art in that time, we honestly have gotten SO MUCH done though it even though doesn't feel like it sometimes. We've both got at least 5 other projects on the side, simmering, growing and changing, and sometimes we rotate between them on the burner so they don't boil over or stop boiling, and it keeps our minds turning. IDK exactly what I'm getting at but HAVE SOME THOUGHTS.

And honestly the little trivia- flowers, accessories, candies, pokemon, god anything else- those all end up contributing to them growing! It's really fascinating how the little things add up. (ALSO NGL SAMMY AND MONA ARE 24/7 PRESHU. JAY CAN COME TOO)

I just went through all of PT's posts. And I'm so happy you and your girlfriend decided to do this project, you have no idea how much this means to me. I'm still a bit scared to come out to my family and friends, as though I feel I am still trying to figure it all out. But seeing this is really refreshing. I can barely put this into words but this project really speaks out to me and comforts me. Thanks to the both of you for starting this project, I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. Happy anniversary PT. :)

Apologies for the slow reply, but; Welcome to our project, then!
It's really the best feeling to know this project can comfort people like yourself, I think that's what keeps us motivated the most. :blushes:
I want you to know that your identity- whether it be orientation, gender, or both- is a personal journey. If you're not ready to pick labels, then you don't have to at all; if you think labels will help you and bring you comfort, then by all means do so! And if you don't feel ready or like you're in a safe environment to come out yet, then don't. Never feel pressured into those things- no one should be in a rush to be "out", because really, this soul-searching is for you first and foremost. :') Everyone else comes second, and it will only be public knowledge if you think it would benefit you.

Thank you, and I hope you're well! :huggle:

Oh, wow! Happy 2nd Anniversary, PT!

Really love the simple aesthetics of this piece! And I know you guys drew your characters separately--and I don't know if this is because I've been watching you both for so long--but for me, your styles are starting to blend almost seamlessly together. Seriously! If someone showed me this and asked me who drew what, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference! The visual quality is like the perfect marriage of Hot Cheetos and sour cream or chocolate ice cream and potato chips (these are good things, I swear)! :D

Also, is the composition meant to bring attention to how tall they actually are, too, because HOLY SHIT! Jess is, like, WAY taller than I thought!

And I've been DYING to see one of you post something PT-related again because I have another song inspiration (Bee got the first one) that you guys might like? I actually follow you guys on Tumblr, and I would've sent it to you guys on there, but then I got nervous since I kinda figured that you guys must get a ton of messages coming in on there, so I was like, "Lol! Nope! Crawl your adoring ass away! OTL"

Anyway, I don't know if you guys listen to Christina Perri, but have you heard "The Lonely" by her? It's heartbreakingly-beautiful! I saw a Stella piece that featured her with a split in character: one side showed her perfectly fine, but I think the other side showed her with bruises and stuff? Then, I saw this piece and read the bit where she was easily broken-hearted, and I thought the song and the lyrics might fit her more.

But the song can just work in any situation where the couples/individuals feel unloved and/or angsty in any way. :)

Anyway, that's it for me! I really love your music selection, so sometimes I find myself listening to songs that you guys might like because you both increased my collection a lot! XD Right, rolling my ass away now!

Yay!! Thank you!!

Forgive me for the late reply! But ahh thank you again, we were really thrilled with the idea of simplistic clean colors for this piece. And man, I can't deny our styles keep growing together really well, along with my lines and her color to tie them together even more. u///u And I have no idea if I'm brave enough to try those combos, but I'll take your word for it! :lmao:

And oh man you totally noticed, yay! We staggered them to be about accurate! Jess is 5' 8" to Sam's 5'7" (but she's slouching a bit here)- Stella's 5'9" to Gale's 5'10", but stella's always taller if she wears heels... heehee! :D

Also oh gosh you silly! Please don't worry about sending us PT asks, we don't get THAT many- and even when we do, we always read them even when we don't respond. But yeah, I'll definitely give it a listen! Thank you for suggesting it! :D

Ahhh I'm happy to share our music tastes, I'll try to do that more often because I love seeing people's song inspirations too!
Thank you again ahhh ya sweetie!!! :tighthug:
